Are We Failing Breastfeeding Moms?

Hey there!

Welcome to Chelsea Lactation & Postpartum Care.

August is Human Lactation Month—a fantastic time to acknowledge, celebrate, and recognize everyone who’s ever tried, succeeded, or faced challenges with breastfeeding. I see all of you out there! Breastfeeding can be a smooth, natural journey for some, while for others, it can be a tough and emotionally gutting experience.

Did you know that sixty percent of mothers don’t breastfeed for as long as they planned? There are so many factors that can influence the decision to breastfeed and how long to continue. Here are just a few:

  • Issues with latching

  • Low milk supply (whether real or perceived)

  • Family dynamics do not support breastfeeding

  • Misinformation from healthcare providers

  • Lack of mental health support

  • History of trauma

  • No or limited access to high-quality lactation support

Whether you’re a new mom, a seasoned pro, or someone supporting a breastfeeding parent, this month is a reminder that we all need to do better—both as a society and as individuals. Every breastfeeding journey is important, and we all have a role in helping more mothers reach their breastfeeding goals.

The Right Support

When it comes to breastfeeding, getting the right support is crucial. Professional services, like those offered by lactation consultants, can provide invaluable help. From troubleshooting common challenges to offering emotional support, the right support makes breastfeeding a more positive and fulfilling experience.

Whether you’re looking for one-on-one support, attending local breastfeeding groups, or accessing online resources, remember that you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Connecting with others and seeking help can be incredibly beneficial.

We Need to Do Better

As we celebrate Human Lactation Month, let’s acknowledge and appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that go into breastfeeding. Share your experiences, connect with others in the breastfeeding community, and foster a supportive environment for all breastfeeding parents. By coming together, we can support lactation and each other, no matter what our individual journeys look like.

Here’s to celebrating and supporting human lactation!

Warm regards,

Jessica
